MEET THE TEAM: Simon Knellwolf

What’s your name?

My name is Simon Knellwolf

What position do you hold in the company?

I’m Process Engineer in the «Boiler Process Improvement» department.

How many years have you been working at the company?

I have been working for Explosion Power for almost a year and a half.

Can you provide a brief description of your role and responsibilities?

I mainly focus on analyzing the effects our Shock Pulse Generators (SPGs) have in boilers. The primary goal is to optimize boiler cleaning and, consequently, the overall boiler operation. To achieve this, we develop a plant-specific digital twin and use current plant data. These data are then analyzed with our process data platform, OpenPi, and presented in tailored diagrams. This approach allows us to discuss the cleaning efficiency and operational optimization of the SPGs in collaboration with the plant operator. By the way, there’s a blog about this! Check out Insight into the World of Boiler Optimization | Explosion Power.

Additionally, I conduct measurements and camera inspections inside boilers during operation – in short, anything that could influence the performance of a Shock Pulse Generator within a boiler.

What important projects or tasks are you currently working on?

Currently, I am deeply involved in automating the settings of Shock Pulse Generators (SPGs). In general, we recommend that our customers adjust the SPG operation to the current plant operation and condition. To achieve this, we use SPG intensity levels that are specifically defined for each plant. The intensity level selected depends on the current boiler operating parameters. This ensures that the cleaning performance of the SPGs is optimally and systematically adapted to the boiler’s condition.

Can you share a personal fun fact about yourself?

I lived and worked in Spain for a few years. The biggest adjustment for me was probably the daily routine. In Spain, lunch is not served until after 2:00 PM, and dinner takes place no earlier than 8:00 PM. I got so accustomed to it that I often ended up having dinner at 10:30 or 11:00 PM. I couldn’t quite shake this habit even after returning to Switzerland, so I often don’t eat dinner before 8:00 PM.

What do you particularly like about your work at Explosion Power GmbH? Can you give us personal insights into your experiences with the company?

Optimization! This applies not only to the settings of the Shock Pulse Generators but also to one’s own work processes. Numerous influencing factors need to be identified first and then specifically managed. Since this field of activity is so broad, there is always something new to learn.
